Focus on Community Service at Cambridge

Sometimes, senior citizens are viewed as being past their prime and no longer a viable part of society. This is far from the truth. In fact, when seniors are given the opportunity to contribute their time and share their wisdom, they can be valuable assets to a community. At Cambridge, we provide volunteer opportunities for seniors that allow our residents to remain vibrant members of their community.

Seniors Doing Community Service

Sometimes, senior citizens are viewed as being past their prime and no longer a viable part of society. This is far from the truth. In fact, when seniors are given the opportunity to contribute their time and share their wisdom, they can be valuable assets to a community. At Cambridge, we provide volunteer opportunities for seniors that allow our residents to remain vibrant members of their community.

  • It starts with a variety of annual service projects at our locations. When it’s time for kids to go back to school, we have Stuff the Bus school supply drives to help the children in the surrounding communities. We help with food banks, and at Christmas we work with the Toys for Tots and Angel Tree programs.
  • We love a good drive. For example, we participate in the quarterly Jesus Ministries Donation Drive. Jesus Ministries is a non-profit organization that accepts clothing, furniture, and household items. Then, too, our Cambridge Village of Wilmington held an internal blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross in February. Filling 23 of 24 available spots, spreading out the times to adhere to social distancing, our staff, residents, and family members donated 18 units of blood. That’s enough to help 54 people. There’s a plan in place to host these blood drives twice a year.
  • We’re proud to help better the lives of people in our state. Our volunteer opportunities are more than just gatherings for seniors. In May, Cambridge Village of Wilmington participated in Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build. This event started in 1991, and it allows women from all walks of life to come together and build stronger, safer, communities. We helped to build homes in partnership with local families, providing access to an affordable mortgage. The homes were finished in July and the new homeowners moved in.
  • Some community events for seniors give them the opportunity to provide valuable sponsorships. During National Senior Health and Fitness Week, Cambridge Village of Apex partnered with the Apex Police Department in the Law Enforcement Torch Run/CVA Walk-a-thon. This event raised money for the 38,000 athletes in the North Carolina Special Olympics. We received a message from the Apex PD thanking us for raising $3,484 for this amazing cause. In October, The Cambridge Brier Creek is sponsoring the Cycle Club in Carolina Arbors for breast cancer. We’ve also done a backpack program in Apex for kids and participated in charity events for the Pretty in Pink Foundation for breast cancer awareness.
