Is Independent Living Right for You?

Is Independent Living Right for You -Cambridge Village

What is senior independent living?

Independent living communities are housing options designed with active adults in mind. They are usually private apartments or villas, and allow older adults to live on their own, while having the advantage of a residential community with likeminded neighbors.

They differ from assisted living facilities that provide support for residents who need help with activities of daily life. Instead, independent living facilities offer their residents an array of services that make life easier and more enjoyable.

While these communities are very popular, they’re not for everyone. Here are some of the benefits and a few tips to help you determine if you’re a good fit.

Benefits of Independent Living Communities:

  • Maintenance free living-no home repairs, no lawn care or house cleaning
  • Services and Amenities-salons, fitness centers, yoga studios, dining services, and more
  • A sense of community-you’re in your own apartment, surrounded by neighbors like you
  • Assistance when you need it-Some communities offer health care assistance when it’s needed.
  • Safety and security-You have neighbors nearby and the communities have staff onsite 24/7 with emergency systems in place.

Here are some guidelines that will help you know if independent living is a good fit for you:

  • You can live independently and don’t require assistance with personal care
  • You want to downsize your living space and let someone else take care of maintenance, repairs, and lawn care
  • You can drive, but appreciate the convenience of complimentary transportation for shopping, errands, appointments, etc
  • You like the peace of mind that comes with living in a residential community
  • You like your privacy, but you want to be able to participate in social activities

How to know that independent living may NOT be a good choice:

  • Although you know that downsizing is probably a good idea, you still want a big home, a garage, lots of storage space, or a yard of your own
  • You relish your privacy to the point that you don’t want to live in close proximity to others
  • You have adult children living with you. Most communities don’t allow it
  • Loss of some freedoms-Living in a residential community, you may have to give up some personal freedoms. During the pandemic for example, these communities followed stringent safety guidelines for the protection of all
